One of the possible causes of this issue is when there’s a Windows update running on the background. To address your concern, we suggest that you run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Feel free to update us on the result.

On a Windows 10 PC, the CPU fan sometimes runs very fast and makes noise because of Windows Module Installer Worker occupies more than 50% of the CPU.

Let us isolate the issue by changing Windows update to manual mode. Follow the steps below and see if it helps:

  1. Press Windows key + R and type services.msc.
  2. Search for Windows Modules Installer.
  3. Double click the Windows Module Installer.
  4. Change the Startup type to Manual.
  5. Go to Settings and select Update&security.
  6. Click on WindowsUpdate.
  7. Click on Advanced options and change Automatic (recommended) to Notify to schedule restart.
  8. Reboot your PC.

Please do get back to us for further assistance.

Windows Modules Installer Worker — high CPU usage

The Windows Modules Installer Worker is a background application that checks for new updates from the Windows server and install them in your computer. It’s task takes high usage of CPU that causes load on the system especially when Windows Update is running.

We recommend that you check the following first:

  • if your device is running the Scheduled Automatic Maintenance
  • if the Windows Update is running and installing

You may check the resolution provided by TnTzzz on this thread.

I had tried changing the modules installer to manual. No update was running as far as I could tell. So after 3 more hrs I killed that process. I figured the worst was a reboot by the OS. As that takes > 1 hr I figured that was the least poor option. Now the process is running again occasionally but not taking any CPU.

If I was to reboot after the changes it is not in the suggestion above.

All of the references are to win 8.1 not win10.

So why does a reboot take more than 1 hour .

If a reboot takes an hour, you may have some type of configuration problem.

Do you have a fair amount of free space on your drive?

Does you Windows Updates page look normal or are you seeing repeated attempts to install some updates?

Any messages in Event Viewer which might be relevant?

If you watch the resource monitor, you might be able to tell what the modules installer is doing.

thanks for responding:

First, the wait is at » Windows is getting your system ready» so I can not see anything of what is happening. Only after an hour do I get to login. There do not appear to be any updates — but how would I know ? There is much space on the hard drive 400 gigs.

You can go to the updates settings and view installed updates and manually check for updates.

If there are some saying failed, there may be multiple listings for it.

It almost sounds like the system is resetting. There should be some message in the Event Viewer.

I do not see any issues with the updates to windows etc. I can’t reboot at this time since I am rebuilding the indexer and have 10+ hrs invested.

I have looked at the event viewer. I don’t see anything specific to rebooting or at the clock time when the rebooting was last done.

more frustrating: I did not get any help for more details:

Clearly the lack of the update working (gets to 99%) is the source of the high CPU on windows modules installer and the long time to reboot.

I will assume the KB506xxxx is a typo. But I can’t find it in the catalog at all..

The error shown means the below. I will see if I can find anything regarding it. There is a service RpcLocator and RpcSs which would seem to be involved. Not sure why yet but possibly a problem reaching a site is not working but I need to do some research.

RPC_S_CALL_FAILED 1726 (0x6BE)

The remote procedure call failed.

The fact it shows not applicable to your computer is a little strange.. Are you in the Insider program or have you been in that program? Possibly it needs an earlier update?

If you want to explore your system, go to the Windows folder and look for the WindowsUpdate.log. Open that and you will be given info on creating a readable log you could check.

The log will be very long but if you want to copy the last few days of entries and paste into a text file you could put that on your OneDrive and give us a link. Make sure and scan the listing to see if anything personal may be included. It will contain info about your system.

Windows Modules Installer Worker?

Windows Modules Installer Worker

Windows».
