What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you attempted to install Vista SP2?
Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Windows Update: Windows Could Not Search For New Updates Error 80070005
Current System Information: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Operating System
Since updating my operating system from Windows XP: Home Edition to Windows 7: Home Premium, Windows Update has not been functioning properly. To note I am the only user, and with administrative authority.
The current error I get is: Windows could not serach for new updates; Errors found: Code 80070005
There are several things I have tried:
— Ran the Windows Update troubleshooter: Troubleshoot was unable to resolve the problem.
— Reseting Windows Update components: Microsoft Fix It says that an online search for updates ran successfully, to restart Windows Update and click ‘Check for updates’, however this does not resolve the problem either. When manually attempting to reset the components I am unable to stop bits [Note: Bits is unable to start giving an error code 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start] and unable to stop wuauserv [Gives System error 5 — Access is denied]

— Attempted to re-install the OS system, but when attempting to update I received this: ‘Windows could not update the installation files. To install Windows close Setup and restart the installation. Error code: 0x583’; Closed set up and re-tried, however same error was given.
— I had attempted a clean boot also, but when I the computer restarted it prompted with Asus II program stopped working, or something to that degree.
I’m truly at a loss of what to do; any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest you to try these steps and check.
Method 1: Disable the security software installed on the computer.
Disable antivirus software
Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn’t disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you’re done. If you’re connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
Try installing the programs in clean boot and check.
To help troubleshoot error message, you can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a «clean boot.» A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
Please note: After the troubleshooting, make sure to boot your computer to normal mode by following the step 7.
Method 3: You may also take a look, if any proxy settings are enabled.
Please follow these steps:
a) Open Internet Explorer
b) Press the ALT key.
d) Click Internet Options
e) Click the Connections tab
f) Click LAN settings
g) Uncheck any boxes that are in the Proxy server section
i) Close Internet Explorer.
Once done, check if you are able to install Windows Updates.
