Windows 10 preinstalled apps including store not working.
I’ve been running Window 10 on a dual boot system for 4 or 5 months.
The Windows 10 OS was upgraded from Windows 8.1 pro. Apart from the loss of Windows Media Centre I was really beginning to like it.
Everything was fine until the last update to version 1511 build 10586.71.
After the update the Windows Photos app stopped working. Clicking on a jpeg in explorer showed an error. Clicking on the icon in the start menu did nothing.
The app troubleshooter showed nothing wrong.
I followed some advise from an MS professional on a thread on here to run the following commands in the powershell:
> DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image/Scanhealth . no errors found.
> DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image/recoverhealth.
> sfc /scannow . no errors found
> Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach
That seems to have nicely corrupted everything !!
Most of the Microsoft app tiles are showing the name @ . it seems to be almost all the core apps Store, Mail, People, Bing Apps, Photos, WindowsMaps, . Other App tiles in the start menu are blank with no icon and no name: . this includes Microsoft apps like Solitaire, Mahjong .. and non Microsoft Apps like Audible, Photoshop Express, VLC In All apps there’s an Others category at the bottom: None of the above apps will run. DISM now claims there are no Scanhealth or RestoreHealth options. Troubleshooter and sfc still claim that they can’t find any problems. I thought there would be a system restore point for each update as in previous versions of Windows but it seems restore points are disabled . and can’t be enabled. I really don’t want to have to do a complete reset. Does anyone have any advice? Can I somehow force the update to be reapplied to see if that fixes it? Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community. Updates and drivers are installed automatically, with no need to select which updates are needed or not needed. In rare cases, a specific driver or update might temporarily cause issues with your device. Since you suspect that the problem started happening after Windows Update, I suggest you to try removing that particular update to see if it makes any difference. When you upgraded from a previous version of Windows or receive a new computer preinstalled with Windows 10, what happened is the hardware (your PC) will get a digital entitlement, where a unique signature of the computer will be stored on Microsoft Activation Servers. The Windows 7 or Windows 8 genuine license you were previously running will be exchanged for a diagnostics key. Anytime you need to reinstall Windows 10 on that machine, just proceed to reinstall Windows 10. It will automatically reactivate. You will prompted to enter a product key a couple times through the installation, click I don’t have a key and Do this later. There is no need to know or get a new key, but if you have issues with Digital Licensing or the Activation Troubleshooter, you can utilize an existing Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product key you already own to reactivate if necessary. or use the reset function in Windows 10. to download the Media Creation Tool (Click on Download Tool Now), with that you can download the latest Windows 10 ISO (Select Create Installation Media for Another PC), you can create a bootable USB flash drive (min 8GB) using that tool
Insert the Bootable Installation Media, then go into your BIOS and make the following changes:
1. Disable Secure Boot
2. Enable Legacy Boot
3. If Available enable CSM
4. If Required enable USB Boot
5. Move the device with the bootable disc to the top of the boot order
6. Save BIOS changes, restart your System and it should boot from the Installation Media
