Windows 10 creators update icon move bug

Windows 10 Creators Update Desktop Icons keep getting rearranged

Is anyone else having this problem ever since you installed the Creators update. This happened a day later after installing the Creators update on 2 of my devices so far, I haven’t changed any settings or anything and they were suddenly rearranged as if auto arrange icons was turned on, which it is not. I have a screenshot I took for a backup I needed after a recent hard drive failure (which is why it is running in Safe Mode) and another screenshot of what happened today.

Thank you for downloading and installing the latest Creator’s Update for Windows 10. However, since you are experiencing this issues with this update, we suggest that you reinstall the Creator’s Update on both of your devices. To do this, kindly follow the steps below:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click Update & security.
  3. Click on Windows Update.
  4. Click the Check for updates button to trigger an update check, which will install the update automatically again.
  5. Click the Restart Now button to complete the task.

you may have already found one solution but if that doesn’t work, or for info —
Microsoft are aware of an issue where desktop icons would sometimes move around unexpectedly when “Auto arrange icons” was set to On and “Align icons to grid” was set to Off.

right click on the desktop and change one of those two settings, until the fix is rolled out.

I had the same issue. Furthermore also the tab of the notifications are lightly strange with a bit of empty space under them.

Already tried to update the graphic card and to play with “Auto arrange icons” and “Align icons to grid” in various ways but nothing changed. It’s quite frustrating and this reminds me why I never updated something that worked perfectly in the past. Silly me.

EDIT: I found out that I can go back to the previous version of W10 (you all can do that if you’ve updated in the last 10 days). Can this step erase something from my computer? Like programs, apps or data? If it’s safe I will procede immediately.

it is not supposed to remove anything (and most times doesn’t) however, as with any major change, things can go wrong.

there is no substitute for backups.

I had same problem after Creators Update.

I have done two things and the system seems not have the problem so far.

1.’Delete Update Cash’, an option of ESET Internet Security 10, was excuted.

(If you do not use ESET, please skip this. )

2. Adjust desktop icon size by using Ctrl+mouse wheel to look like a stable arrangement.

I am not sure whether the number one procedure is necessary or not, but previously ESET causes this problem.

Hi. I’ve got a similar problem that might be the same thing but just under the somewhat different context that I like turning off both automatic icon arrangment and grid alignment and just arrange my icons however I like. After that big recent update however, it’s like my desktop suddenly imposed these really annoying invisible boundaries as to where my icons can and not go (tbf, horizontally, the boundary is a little before the edge of my screen, but vertically, in the lower edge, it’s just somewhere invisible a little higher than the taskbar; I’m annoyed by both because sometimes I put my icons in places where the icon itself is still visible, but the box that contains it may be past that edge, which I now can’t do).

Do these kind of things happen to you too (for example if you turn off auto-arrangement and grid and then just try to freely move your icons)?

That icon won’t go below from where that selection box shows. Worse yet, if you attempt to go over the invisible boundaries (or accidentally do), the icons may get teleported to some random far away place:

Left side shows the current position of that icon (where the selection box is) and me about to drop it a little closer to that corner. Right side shows where that icon goes the moment I try to drop it. I guess that’s the system trying to drop it somewhere where it’s not even close any other icon? It still looks arbitrary and super random: Instead of moving down where I wanted it to go it did the opposite and went way up. Why not just not do anything so it at least would stay where it was? I enjoy the freedom to arrange my desktop however I like a great deal so this is pretty upsetting to be honest =/

I tried to look for updates again and installing them, but new updates seem unrelated to the problem. I also just tried Travis’ solution, but that wasn’t quite it. I’m considering just reverting the update, but staying in an outdated state is not ideal.

I have been having this problem since about a week ago. I just checked «Auto-arrange icons» under the desktop right-click—>view menu, then refreshed, then unchecked the «Auto-arrange», replaced my icons where I wanted them, and refreshed again. It looks like the problem is solved after putting the machine to sleep and waking it back up. Fingers crossed it holds up.

Hope this can help someone else.

I have the same issue. Brand new HP spectre 360 and I can not get the desktop icons to stay where I put them. I have unchecked and checked auto arrange several times. Also checked and unchecked the grind in combination with the auto arrange but every time I turn my laptop on and off they are always rearranged. Is there any answer to this yet?

I also had auto arrange unchecked, had upgraded drivers and all the bit and it still occurred. I wanted to share this information that I found yesterday. It has worked so far in keeping my icons in place (fingers crossed that it continues):

Right click on the desktop

Uncheck ‘Auto Arrange Icons’

Check ‘Align Icons to Grid’

Arrange your icons in the way you want them

Right click on the desktop

Left click Refresh (this is the key for Windows remembering your icon location. There is something that makes Windows forget – sometimes and only sometimes. I’d suggest clicking refresh several times. I also restarted after and hit refresh again just for good measure– like an elevator button for an elevator not arriving fast enough, useless likely but you feel better).

tried this but didnt stick, does anybody have a solution or will microsoft even bother to fix this problem. **** me off when ever the computer resets, sleeps, or i switch or mirror to the tv that this sh** keeps happening

Sorry, these steps finally worked for me. I hit refresh several times and restarted. It has been several months and they have not moved again.

I read another location to be sure your drivers are up to date. May be worth a shot. Good luck

this answer is not helpful but trivial. In another thread several hundreds have posted their frustration with this topic. One of them has even twittered Gabe Aul, a hot shot manager at MS without any reaction.

Its a problem well known in the community. Another tread has hundreds of post. But even Tweets to Gabe Aul did not change a thing.

Here my opinion to the facts:

The reason for all this is the new booting process started with Windows 10 where MS has changed to an «always on» philosophy. This has produced some severe incompatibilities in functions that depend on solid hardware-information like the screens attached. On the other side, many larger screens no longer support DVI as their host-protocol but need DisplayPort or HDMI. Many of them don’t deliver configuration data to the drivers. This altogether leads to calls of graphic drivers to the Shell with default a screen resolution of 1024 x 768. The Shell Shell simply tries to map icons and windows into this «new» screen size. This works as designed. You can check that yourself by trying to drop any icon onto an existing non-folder icon and you will see how icons are moved. After any changes, the icon positions are stored in a «bag» which is index by screen resolution.

And here a typical MS bug rises its head: Instead of saving the rearranged icon positions in their proper bag, they are saved in the «actual» bag which has been remembered from the last boot. Et voilà, they are scrambled on the screen. And there seems to be no way to convince MS to put this on the bug-list.

Here are some possible workarounds (Ordered with increasing complexity to handle):

  1. Use a display driver that is designed to support Windows 10.
  2. Disable the «Generic PnP Monitor» driver using Device Manager if you don’t have a native DVI attachment to your monitor. This is hard to check on laptops!.
  3. Use the standard display drivers from Microsoft. It should be always offered, when you want to «Update» the display driver from sources on your PC.
  4. Use a screen and a graphics card with native DVI adapters. Be aware of restricted refresh rates in this case.
  5. Use a save/restore software available from the internet. Be aware of virus threat!

I’m using an EIZO 27″ 2560 x 1440 monitor and an Intel 4600 integrated graphics engine on an ASUS board with display port cabling. My icons were misplaced after each boot or wake up.

To fix this, I changed to MS standard driver first. Sleep mode was gone with it! Then I had some postings with the Intel support. Since the last update from Intel to driver version 20.19.15.4331 all my 60 icons rest in peace at the locations I put them.
