Microsoft Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor —

      Author’s review

The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is a small beta application that you can run on your current Windows XP-based computer to find out if it’s ready for an upgrade to Windows Vista. When you run the Upgrade Advisor, it will scan your computer and generate an easy-to-understand report of any known system and device compatibility issues, along with recommendations on how you can get your PC ready for Windows Vista. Microsoft plans to add functionality to Upgrade Advisor, such as checking how your software applications will run with Windows Vista. Download the beta version today and check this site in a few months for a new version.

Upgrade Advisor is currently a beta release and contains functionality and features that have not been thoroughly tested and may contain errors. Please consider the information that Upgrade Advisor currently provides as preliminary and check back periodically for new versions, which will include updated device information and additional functionality such as checking how your software applications will run with Windows Vista.

It’s extremely likely that this software program is clean.

      What does this mean?

We have scanned the file and URLs associated with this software program in more than 50 of the world’s leading antivirus services; no possible threat has been detected.

This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software.

Why is the software program still available?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are possibly false positives.

      What is a false positive?

It means a benign program is wrongfully flagged as malicious due to an overly broad detection signature or algorithm used in an antivirus program.

It’s highly probable this software program is malicious or contains unwanted bundled software.

Why is this software program no longer available in our Catalog?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are likely to be real positives.

We’d like to highlight that from time to time, we may miss a potentially malicious software program. To continue promising you a malware-free catalog of programs and apps, our team has integrated a Report Software feature in every catalog page that loops your feedback back to us.

Flag any particular issues you may encounter and Softonic will address those concerns as soon as possible.

Will help me decide which edition best suits me

Is never able to contact the server to scan for hardware compatibility (the whole point of using it).
I can find no useful help to resolve this online, have Microsoft taken the server down?

Would be a very useful, if not bulletproof, tool if it only worked as it should, and as the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor DOES, I’m left not knowing if I can upgrade my old laptop from XP to Vista, having already determined it won’t run Windows 7.

As support for XP is ending, Microsoft really need to address this as more and more of use will soon be forced off XP, or else face running without current patches!

I certainly can’t afford to upgrade on a whim, and could easily end up with a very expensive coaster labelled «Windows Vista Upgrade», since I’m unwilling to do that, I may look at linux, easy enough to throw in a Live CD and see if THAT runs for effectively nothing..

It identifies hardware the computer contains that might not work, because some of it will work anyway with some adjustment. For instance it said the Broadxent internal modem on older socket 462 mobo wouldn’t work under Vista. True, to a point, the installation program wouldn’t run since it realized Vista was not W2K. It did install the driver files and the modem work fine simply by right clking on the install file, choosing properties, then the compatibility tab, and setting to W2K, which was an NT system too. Install program ran fine then, loaded the driver files, and Vista had no problem running the old dialup modem. So, use it as a guide, not as the final word on what will or not run under Vista.

Doesn’t determine if hardware it says won’t run Vista will be able to do so using Compatibility Mode.

Like any tool, it’s value is based on the ability of the user.

      None. Product is obsolete.

      None. Product is obsolete.

After the release of Windows 7, Microsoft has discontinued the Vista Upgrade Advisor, and has as such severed the links to servers providing compatibility info for Vista. Hence, the product will install, but will run with an error.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor will offer the same type of assessment as this product. While not all Vista machines are «officially» compatible with Win 7, the similarities between Vista and Win 7 are enough that 7’s tool can be used as a Vista guide.

Easy to install and uninstall and causes no harm to other programs as far I can see. Be aware that if WVUA no information about a hardware or a software has you cannot ignore this when upgrading to Vista, on the contrary to the to do list of WVUA. You can also use WVUA on Windows Vista (except Enterprise Edition and only 32-bit Editions of XP and Vista) to see if a program or hardware compatible is with Vista.

Sometimes my printer (HP 940c) is OK and then later WVUA has no information about this printer. So I am not sure about this.

Nice colour setting, nice 3D graphic

it slows your PC down, the graphics must still be defined properly, should have more colour changing options.

Can’t say anything positive so far..

This is the second time I have downloaded and installed the Vista Upgrade Advisor and attempted to run it. I have a Compaq laptop that I purchased just before Vista was released. As an IT pro it has the most recent updates and is in perfect condition with two gigs of RAM. Yet when I run the upgrade advisor the program just seemingly runs forever. Last tiem I had to cancel the program as I needed to pack up my laptop, I tried again today and it’s been running for over two hours. I have left the computer idle the whole time. Probably gonna have to quit again soon.

The .msi file would not run if you have Windows XP Service Pack 1 or lesser.
