Thinkvantage system update windows update

What is ThinkVantage System Update and what is it used for?

Answer

Over the years the Lenovo terminology or branding for System Update has changed. Originally ThinkVantage System Update, and more recently referred to as just System Update, the functionality of the application remains the same — to evaluate the system and automatically install the latest BIOS, Drivers, and Lenovo provided utilities.

There are several ways to access the utility depending on model of Lenovo ThinkPad system. You can always go to the start menu and type «system update» to find the applicaion.

Older ThinkPads

Older ThinkPads were equipped with a special blue, «ThinkVantage» button. The following steps apply to these systems which are running the preloaded operating system.

  1. Press the «ThinkVantage» button (Blue button)
  2. Place mouse cursor on the «Maintanance» at Resource Center
  3. Select «Update my system»
  4. In ‘ThinkVantage System Update» Welcome page, click Next
  5. Application will check for any updates available for your ThinkPad
  6. There will be 4 tabs available «Critical updates» / «Recommended updates» / «Optional updates» / «Extras» which will list down the updates available for your ThinkPad.
  7. Select the «Updates» which you would want the software to install and click Next
  8. TVSU would then download the drivers needed for your system.
  9. Remember to reboot your laptop when prompted to do so.

**It is a good practice reboot your laptop after updating any drivers or BIOS**

If you are unable to find «Maintanance» in the ThinkVantage — Resource Center, do download the ThinkVantage System Update via Link.

Newer ThinkPads

Lauch System update from the Windows Start menu, desktop icon. If you have re-loaded your system with a fresh install of Windows, you will need to download System Update from the Lenovo support site by following this link. Select the version appropriate to your version of Windows.

Launch system update

When System update runs, it automatically checks to see if the installed version needs an update. This will only apply to copies already on your systems, as those downloaded directly will be the latest version.

Once the update completes, system update will move on to checking for updates specific for your system.

You will have an option to select which (of any) updates that it finds. Updates are grouped as Critical, Recommended, and Optional.

You may check items you wish to install. Note that some packages have dependencies upon others so if you have selected one with dependencies, it may prevent you from deselecting others that it will need. Select next, and continue along. Selected updates will be installed and one or more reboots may be needed during the process, so be sure to save and close all other applications while running system update.

Thinkvantage system update windows update

System update 4.0 works fine with Windows 7 RTM, but system update 3.14 does not work with Windows 7 at all.

If system update 4.0 works with Windows 7 beta i don’t know since i never used the beta, but at least 4.0 support Windows 7 so i suggest you just try and see if it works or not.

So i suggest you try this one instead:

Re: windows 7 and Thinkvantage System Update

Thanks Gan, you are quite right. I have installed 4.0 and it works fine.

The underlying problem is the navigation for the support pages. I often find it difficult and have to resort to searching. The search pulled out the 3.14 article and there was no indication on it that there was a newer version.

Re: windows 7 and Thinkvantage System Update

I recently installed win 7 ultimate on X200 and try to the system update 4 without much luck!!

Installation went well, and after reboot, when executing the system update 4, the welcome page will come up and stays for like a min and then nothing happen, just quit.

I looked into the system update folder under logs, there’re ‘tvsu_exe.txt» with no error, but another file «UACSdk.txt» has something like

I think these are the error causing the System Update fail to run, but how to fix it?

From the product page, it only states the package requires Dotnet framework of 2.0, but windows 7 comes with 2.0 and 3.5 by default.

Re: windows 7 and Thinkvantage System Update

I have a R400 with Win 7 Pro 32-bit. I was wanting to download the System Update package for my machine. But when I read the accompanying text document, I find that the R400 and the R500 are not listed as being systems on which the package can be downloaded and used. I do note, however, that this Win 7 specific package can be used for the T400 and the T500.

Could you please tell me if this package can be used on my R400?

Re: ThinkVantage System Update windows 10 x230

I installed Win 10 on my system Jan 11. Clean install. I installed latest SU 5.07.0019.

I uninstalled SU and went to reinstall it. I got the following screen:

I replied YES to uninstall, then got the following screen.

I replied YES and the install went fine.

I did not experience this issue under Windows 7.

Another user, in another SU post, recently noted this issue occuring under win 10. I am now seeing 1st hand what the user saw.

@record71, is this what you are seeing?

Re: ThinkVantage System Update windows 10 x230

I did not experience any I/O error 997 issue under Win 10 installing SU.

All included KB3072630, 7/14/2015 , security update, caused? I/O error 997 win 7 during SU install.

3072630 included 3 KB from aug 2015 forward.

Said KB was win10 KB3074683, win 10 release, early Aug 2015 or so.

So for win7 users and win10 users 2 different issues.

Re: ThinkVantage System Update windows 10 x230

System Update 5.07.022, systemupdate507-2016-01-13.exe, is being offered via self update, for users with SU installed. It is not on the download page yet. Check the download page later this week for this version.
