Based on my research on Microtek, Microtek ScanMaster 4850 neither has Windows 7 compatible driver released nor has troubleshooting available for scanners that are installed with un-official Windows 7 drivers. The most latest driver on Microtec site is for Windows XP. As far as I know, only as a work around, you can try to install Windows XP driver in Windows XP compatibility mode, but I can’t guarantee if it works. You can download Windows XP driver from the following website:

I tried Paroxysm’s solution for my ScanMaker 4850 under Windows 7 64bit. After downloading the drivers (ScanWizard DI V3.03) and unziping them, I tried updating the drivers for the unknown device pointing to these directories, unfortunately that did not work. So I had to edit the .inf file to correct the USB ID. I edited in \scanwizard di v3.03\disk1\win7\amd64 the file MiiAMD64_021.inf and changed all occurrences of: USB\VID_05DA&PID_2007 to USB\VID_05DA&PID_30D9 . Then I was able to install the drivers. However, although the drivers appeared to install correctly, the scannner still did not work in Windows 7. However it did appear as a Scanner in device manager.

The next step was something I was planning on anyway. I converted my old XP OS environment into a VMWare VMPlayer Virtual Machine and got it running under Windows 7. Since it had valid drivers, I merely used VMPlayer to attach the ArtixScan USB scanner in Windows 7 to the Windows XP VM and the scanner works fine in Windows XP running under Windows 7.

Well, I was totally unable to make my old trusy Microtek Scanmaker 4850 or my old Epson picturemate (first version of printer) work under 7 until I purchased a Belkin N750DB router which has 2 USB ports on it for any use. When I plugged my old Microtek scanner and Epson Printermate into the 2 USB ports on he Bekin N750DB router’s two USB ports and restated the system, I was easily able to install the latest drivers (Microtek Scanmaker 6.32 (latest I could find) and the Epson Picturemate drivers from Epson’s websites, SUDDENLY Windows 7 Pro was able to «see» them and let me intall them. I’ve used them both to do scans and photo prints like the old days with Windows XP. if I plug the same devices into PC USB ports it doesn’t work. In my testing, after I installed them both, I was able to use them plugged directly into the computer USB ports, but choose to leave them plugged into the ethernet router USB plugs because I don’t have any other use for those router USB ports now with 10 USB ports on the motherboard as I built it.

Yes, it was an easy workaround. When I upgraded my computers to 802.11N (higher speed wi-fi), I had to buy a 802.11N router, and I found a great deal on the Belkin N750DB router which is not only fast but it has TWO USB PORTS on it. When you install the Belkin router software, plug in your USB Microtek Scanmaker 4850 into IT, suddenly Windows 7 «sees» the scanner and lets you install the latest version (I used Scanwizard v6.32) and Voila! Your scanmaker buttons work, you can scan into Photoshop again, the works. I also was able to get my old Epson Picturemate to work by plugging IT into the routers USB ports so apparently when you plug them into the router Ethernet can sense them when plain old PC USB ports cannot. Good luck. You might have to unplug the router, unplug the scanner, then plug the router back in and let it «warm up», then plug the scanner in again and power it up so that it sends a signal to the router via USB that «I’m here». just play with different unplug/plug in orders until you see it, I’ve done it on two computers now and it only took about 10 minutes each and suddenly I’ve done what nobody on internet says can be done — but that’s thanks to 35 years of computer experience I guess.

Hope it works for you too.

Everything else failed: There are no drivers from Mikrotek. Drivers from other companies did not work. The compatibility mode did not work either with the driver.

Finally I installed Windows Virtual machine and I installed Windows XP within this virtual machine. Of course I needed my old XP license and CD. At the end I was able to see XP in an window of its own. In this window I could install the driver of the Mikrotek Scanmaker 4850. After activating the scanner for the virtual machine I could use the scanner as before.

Now I just had to find a way to transfer the scanned images from the virtual environment to the one I usually work in. Since I was not able to activate the Clipboard (is this function not available in Win 7 home?) I used Dropbox and eMail. Its a bit circumstancial but it worked.

Nevertheless I am disappointed that there is not a universal driver for old scanners.
