IBM ThinkPad X40 — рекорд функций при минимуме веса

Мы ничего не имеем против общепринятого мнения, что серьезный ноутбук должен быть выполнен в серебристых цветах (а именно так выглядят 90% современных экземпляров), но верим, – классика всегда будет в моде. Ноутбук IBM ThinkPad X40 подтверждает это лучше всяких слов, – его насыщенно черный окрас иначе как благородным не назовешь. Компания в очередной раз следует выбранному ею направлению, причем это касается не только цвета, но и строгости форм (скругления минимальны), да и вообще облик устройства узнаваем издалека. У нас даже не возникло ощущения топорности работы или старомодности, все выглядит современно и технологично.

Выглядит ноутбук очень строго

Вторым неожиданным моментом оказалась удивительная легкость и компактность этого ноутбука. Взглянув на паспортные данные (1,23 кг и 268х211х21мм, соответственно), мы убедились, что IBM совершила маленький переворот. По отношению к своему предшественнику ThinkPad X31 наш подопечный стал на 20% компактнее и на четверть легче. Спору нет, компания выбрала истинную стратегию, толщина и масса – это как раз те параметры, уменьшения которых больше всего жаждет пользователь.

Без док станции – очень тонкая машина

«Портовое хозяйство» ноутбука также оказалось в полном порядке. На тестировании была «машина» в комплекте с док-станцией, на которой нашелся даже LPT-порт (традиция, понимаете ли). А вот слот Secure Digital в пару классическому PCMCIA расположен на корпусе самого ноутбука. Представители компании утверждают, что здесь впервые использован мощный порт USB 2.0 (только один из двух, размещенных не на док-станции), позволяющий подключать внешние оптические дисководы без отдельного адаптера питания. Актуальная возможность с учетом того, что ноутбук собран по одношпиндельной схеме. Впрочем, при необходимости расширить функциональность можно, задействовав док-станцию X4 UltraBase Dock, в которую устанавливается оптика и добавляется большое количество дополнительных портов.

В тесноте, да не в обиде

Раскрыв IBM ThinkPad X40, мы были поражены плотностью компоновки, судя по всему, компании пришлось приложить титанические усилия, чтобы найти здесь место еще и для «железной» начинки (о ней чуть ниже). Вы еще раз взгляните на габариты этого ноутбука, и учтите, что у него 12,1-дюймовый дисплей и полноразмерная клавиатура! Верхняя половинка целиком занята TFT-матрицей, только в самом низу узенькая полоска отведена под индикаторы. По качеству отображения претензий не возникло, разрешение 1024х768 пикселей чуть великовато для такой диагонали, но все видно хорошо. Запас яркости неплохой, цвета отличаются сочностью, разве что углы обзора показались нам не очень широкими (наблюдается инвертирование цветов при отклонении).

Новинка является самой легкой в линейке производителя

Что касается клавиатуры, то ей отдана вся ширина нижней половинки, по бокам остались считанные миллиметры. Эргономика клавиатуры на высоте, это один из лучших ноутбучных вариантов, виденных нами. «Нормальное» расположение служебных клавиш, курсорный блок справа внизу, выделенная цветом клавиша «Enter», есть место для кистей рук… вот так по мелочам и складывается настоящий комфорт. Возможно, для многих минусом окажется TrackPoint, но ничего не поделаешь, не любят в IBM тачпады, и все тут. Впрочем, мы быстро к нему привыкли, благо можно не снимая пальца, подтверждать выбор и скроллировать страницы в браузере. А теперь маленький эксперимент: включаем подсветку клавиатуры и выключаем свет. Потрясающее зрелище, и самое главное, работать можно.

Что цифры, вся сила в балансе

Как известно, главным показателем «успешности» ноутбука является баланс. Ведь можно создать суперпроизводительное устройство, насыщенное самыми последними технологиями, но если эта махина сможет продержаться автономно пару часов, то в чем тогда ее смысл? По нашему мнению, компания IBM выбрала пусть и не самый яркий, но зато практичный вариант. Судите сами, в ThinkPad X40 установлены процессор Intel Pentium M ULV с тактовой частотой 1, 2 ГГц, 512 Мб оперативной памяти DDR SDRAM (максимум 1,5 Гб), видеоадаптер Intel Extreme Graphics 2, использующий до 64 Мб общей памяти и жесткий диск на 40 Гб.

Максимальное количество портов – на задней панели док-станции

Однако такой аппаратный минимализм нивелируется великолепным временем автономной работы. Стандартная 8-элементная батарея позволяет ноутбуку держаться на плаву 7,5 часов. Думаем, что такой показатель устроит подавляющее большинство пользователей, если же нет, то можно поставить и расширенную батарею, которой хватит на 10 часов. Целый день работать, и на ночь ставить на подзарядку (время полной зарядки 3,5 часа) – шикарные возможности.

В то же время никак нельзя пройти мимо фирменных технологий IBM, нашедших применение в этом ноутбуке. В первую очередь, хочется отметить наличие системы защиты жесткого диска Active Protection System. Идея проста, но эффективна: внутри установлен микрочип, измеряющий ускорение, и как только оно превышает допустимый уровень, автоматически паркуются головки записи/чтения диска (очень похоже на принцип действия воздушных подушек в автомобиле). Вторая «изюминка» – набор средств Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore.

Специализированная аварийная система содержит полный набор утилит, обеспечивающих восстановление системы одним нажатием после наиболее распространенных сбоев (вирусы, отсутствие системных файлов, поврежденные драйверы и т.п.). Обратите внимание, эта утилита работает независимо от ОС, и работоспособна даже в случае, если у вас, пардон, Windows «посыпалась».

Если вы считаете, что в мире нет ничего совершенного, то ваше суждение имеет право на жизнь. Но мы думаем, что компания IBM знает, где это совершенство искать. Тонкий, легкий, эргономичный, мощный, функциональный, энергоемкий, уникальный,… перечислять характеристики IBM ThinkPad X40 можно долго, но не в этом суть. Главным нам видится разумное сочетание мобильности и производительности, претендующее на звание «золотой середины».

Ibm x40 windows 10

I have used my trusty x40 ThinkPad for so long I finally wore the hard disk out. No probs, it had chugged away for many years. I replaced the HD and went to install the 7 recovery disks that were with it.

Unfortunately this wouldn’t work.. It happily lets me sit here for hours looking like its going to work but then at the last mo states recovery failed and gives no clue as to why.

Not to worry, I phoned customer support and was told they couldn’t help as my warranty has long since expired but if I had another copy of XP to just put that on.

So, I have installed XP pro and patched to SP3 and it works fine except for a load of missing drivers which isn’t XPs fault hence me saying it works great..

The following drivers are missing

Multimedia Audio controller

Video controller (VGA)

So, I have downloaded the Ethernet, Video, audio and wireless driver from

On executing the files they unpack and install yet make no difference in device manager.

Can anyone offer any solution? I be very grateful and admit it has me beat.

Hi Mickey! Welcome to the forum.

I think I know what the problem is. The Lenovo drivers packages are a bit odd. On executing the files they unpack, but they don’t install.

After executing and unpacking each driver package there is an install procedure to follow. The procedure is described on the download page for each driver. Usually it involves going to the folder where the driver was unpacked to and executing setup.exe, but not always.

For example, the audio drivers unpack by default to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\. Then to actually install the drivers you have run C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE.

Also don’t forget to install the Intel Chipset drivers!

Thanks tons for your advice. Id never have figured that out alone. I just thought right ive downloaded them and they have installed when i double clicked. Bizarre the way you have to do it, IE find them after this process and then find the . exe file.

Anyhow, all done now and all working fine thanks to your advice.

Could you link my to the chipset driver. Cant see it.

Now the only drivers I havent got is my modem (which i dont care about) and an unknown device but if i dont know what it is it cant be that big a deal.

Hi, I experience some of the same problems. After formating the hard drive and installing XP with SP3 a lot of drivers were missing. Now I have the most of them installed after following the two step installation. But one is missing.

The wireless network still doesn’t work and in the device manager it appears that an «Ethernet-controller» isn’t working.

I have tried to install the wireless drivers for X40. Can anyone help me?

I had an issue with my X40 not recognizing any of the Windows XP wireless card drivers available through the Lenovo site. The only Ethernet driver available worked, but none of the three wireless drivers did. Worse, I couldn’t even tell what card I had. The device manager only listed a «network controller,» or something to that effect. Anyway, long story short, I went to the Intel site and downloaded a legacy wireless driver (the same one works for a bunch of different cards). I didn’t install HotKeys, Access Manager, or Power Management, or whatever they’re called. My card now works fine and I just manage the connections with Windows. My card turns out to be the Intel 2200BG.

Also, I don’t think X40’s have this option, but make sure you don’t have your wireless card disabled by an external switch. My Z60 and wife’s X200s have these switches and they can make you go crazy trying to figure out why the connection isn’t working.

Hope that helps. I’m posting this on all the X40 threads regarding wireless issues because I was so flummoxed and annoyed by this stupid issue.How can Lenovo have ignored this for so long? Pathetic.

Hi, I also have a thinkpad x40 2371-GHU with the intel 2200 running windows XP.

On the main driver page for the X40 here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-54078.html they have a number of drivers for various wireless cards, intel, atheros, etc. Unfortunately the intel driver listed is for the 2100, not the 2200. The driver directory page says it supports the 2200, but not on the actual download page for the driver. I personally couldn’t get it to work.

I believe (it’s been a few weeks since I’ve needed it) the proper driver for the 2200 available from Lenovo is this one: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-62875

This problem isn’t limited to the x40, I most recently had to reinstall a T41 which also has an intel 2200 and the 2100 driver listed on the download page.

I personally like the way IBM/Lenovo packages their drivers, you can install them directly with the device manager (right click on device-> update or install driver) for a clean install without the extra applications. Unfortunately, this can leave the user unfamiliar with thinkpads a bit baffled trying to figure out why they were not installed or even where they were extracted to (C:\DRIVERS in most cases).

I see a few different topics here concerning this same issue. I think Lenovo needs to fix their links or update which driver files support what hardware.

The Lenovo driver from their website didn’t work for me, even with doing «update driver» through device manager. The Intel driver direct from Intel.com did, however.

I am experiencing EXACTLY the same problems, including the attempt to install the «Repair & Restore» diskettes, which only stripped all the HD contents before aborting after several hours of boring work. (My machine is long out of warranty also). I then did a clean install of XP SP3. To my surprise, this worked fine (for a while — see further notes) but with the same list of missing drivers. However, one of the drivers apperently effected the WiFi card, as I was unable to use Fn-F5 to turn on the WiFi radio (the dialog box wouldn’t come up but Bluetooth, but not WiFi did turn on) so I had no network and no Internet access.

After many fruitless attempts to set up the network (no network connections at all showed in «Network Connections») I rebooted, and got the same cyclic check errors which initiated this effort. I finally found out this was a HD issue, so I pulled the HD and ordered a KingScan SSD, which I am waiting for. Now my plan is to download all the drivers I can find from the Lenovo site onto a CD on another machine (remember, I will have no network until I can turn on the WiFi radio) and install from CD after installing XP.

Does this sound viable? In particular, will this make Fn-F5 work gain?
