Question
how can i downgrade windows sever 2012 standard to windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise / Standard ?
Answers
If you have Windows Server 2012 Standard edition, you will have the right to downgrade your bits to any prior version of Enterprise, Standard or Essentials editions.
For the details about the method, I suggest you call activation center in your region.

In some cases, you can convert an evaluation installation (freely downloadable) to a full license:

I have Windows 2012 R2 STD OEM and Retail Version of licenses and I need downgrade to 2008 R2 Enterprise because my applications are not compatible with 2012.
Microsoft giving me runaround over a week no luck to downgrade. Can you please guide?
I am a reseller and a customer just asked this question. Tech support reassured me that this is the case.
Qty2 of Server 2012 r2 std = Qty1 2008 enterprise
The reverse is also true of Software Assurance. If you own a 2008 Enterprise license, you can use your Software Assurance to convert it to Qty 2 of Server 2012.

Question
We have purchased 2 Windows 2012 Standard Licenses. I have to downgrade this to Windows Server 2008 R2 as my current VMware version do not support Windows Server 2012. If I downgrade this to Windows Server 2008 R2 what will be impact on licensing? Will it follow licensing model for Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Please help as it is confusing me. Thanks in advance.

Q15. If I want to use the bits from an earlier version or edition, what are my options?
If you have Windows Server 2012 Datacenter edition you will have the right to downgrade your bits to any prior version or lower edition.
If you have Windows Server 2012 Standard edition, you will have the right to downgrade your bits to any prior version of Enterprise, Standard or Essentials editions.
The ability to run downgrade bits does not change the licensing or support terms in which you can use the product; the purchased product (Windows Server 2012) rights apply. This means that the license will continue to cover two physical processors and the virtualization rights do not change.

This is completely incorrect.

In addition to what Paul and Don have said, there are a couple of things that a lot of people forget about when it comes to licensing. First, if you purchase a 2012 license, you have purchased the rights that come with that version of the license, regardless of which version of the operating is installed when using the 2012 downgrade rights.
Secondly, licenses are not installed; they are assigned to a specific piece of hardware, which is really a bookkeeping transaction (and you really should keep track of this in case your own auditors want to see that you are in compliance with what you have purchased). You may install a copy of the operating system on the physical host or a virtual machine, but that is a right granted by the license that is assigned to the physical host.

Hi, the question for Microsoft is very simple.
If a customer needed previous OEM kit, as far as Windows server 2008 you could obtain them from the link:
where there was the form to complete to send Microsoft the request.
Now that the link is not working anymore, and redirect to
where is the possibility to request the previous OEM retail kit (2008R2, 2008 and 2003R2)? How could the customer obtain them?
The downgrade process
Follow these steps to downgrade to a previous version of Windows or Windows
Server software:
- Obtain genuine Windows media and a corresponding product key for the version
of Windows that is eligible for downgrade.- The media should come from a prior legally licensed version from the OEM or
Retail channels. - End users who are licensed separately through Microsoft Volume Licensing
(VL) may provide their VL media and key to a system builder to facilitate the
downgrade on their own systems.
- The media should come from a prior legally licensed version from the OEM or
- Insert the downgrade-eligible version of Windows media in the CD drive and
follow the installation instructions. - Type the product key.
- If the software was previously activated, you will not be able to activate
it online. In this case, the appropriate local Activation Support phone number
will be displayed. Call the number and explain the circumstances. When it is
determined that the end user has an eligible Windows license, the customer
service representative will provide a single-use activation code to activate the
software. Please note that Microsoft does not provide a full product key in this
scenario.
- If the software was previously activated, you will not be able to activate
- Activate the software.

I tried following your steps to downgrade but the license key for server 2012 does not work with the server 2008 R2 after installing server 2008 R2.
