Драйвер это по своей сути связующее звено между операционной системой, то есть программным обеспечением и железом, то есть физическими устройствами, таким как видеокарты, принтеры, процессоры и т.д. В операционной системе могут быть заложены базовые драйвера для самых необходимых устройств — мышка, клавиатура, но для всего остального потребуются свежие драйвера.
Как установить драйвер?
a) Для начала надо на рабочем столе выбрать значок (Мой компьютер) и нажать по нему правой кнопкой мыши, в выпадающем меню выбрать (Свойства).
b) Теперь переходим на вкладку (Оборудование) и нажимает на кнопку (Диспетчер устройств).
c) Теперь необходимо выбрать устройство для которого будет устанавливаться/обновляться драйвер. На строке с устройством надо нажать правой кнопкой мыши и в выпадающем меню выбрать (Свойства), либо можно просто дважды по нему щелкнуть, чтобы перейти в нужные настройки.
d) Переходим на вкладку (Драйвер), выбираем кнопку (Обновить).
e) В появившемся диалоговом окне выбираем пункт (Нет, не в этот раз) и переходим (Далее).
f) На этом этапе есть два вариант. Можно попытаться установить драйвера в автоматическому режиме, тогда ОС сама попытается найти подходящие устройству драйвера и установить их, для этого выбираем (Автоматическая установка (рекомендуется)) , если попытка завершится неудачно, то надо переходить ко второму пункту (Установка из указанного места) и выбираем (Далее).
g) Этот пункт меню подразумевает выбор между поиском драйвера на сменных носителях и вариантом указать папку с драйвером самостоятельно. Поэтому если в наличии есть диск с драйверами, то надо вставьте диск в CD-rom и выбрать вариант (Поиск на сменных носителях (дискетах, компакт-дисках..)) и перейти (Далее).
Если драйвер найден и скачен в интернете самостоятельно, то надо указать в ручную путь к папке в которой находятся установочный данные для драйвера следующим образом. Выбираем пункт (Включить следующее место поиска:) и переходим в (Обзор), теперь из списка выбираем папку с драйвером и кликаем на кнопку (ОК). Теперь смело переходим (Далее), если все сделано правильно, то начнется установка необходимого драйвера.

CONEXANT HD SMARTAUDIO 221 is not giving me headphones capability. Speakers fine. Headphones option not even in volume mixer. Headphones are new. Computer is new. Updated drivers and done everything i could find online to do. Nothing has worked. Please Help!

Are you using the COMPAQ PRESSARIO CQ60-211DX NOTEBOOK PC with Windows 7? May I know since when are you facing this issue?
- Did you try a different headset to isolate the issue further?
I suggest your reinstall the Audio Driver from Device Manager
— Select the Start button, type Device Manager, and select it from the list of results.
— Look for Audio Adapters and expand the List
— Look for Audio driver then right-click it, and select Update Driver.
— Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
— If Windows doesn’t find a new driver, you can try looking for one on the device manufacturer’s website and follow their instructions.
— If these steps don’t work, try reinstalling the driver: Open Device Manager, right-click the Audio driver and select Uninstall. Restart your PC and Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

Hey KrazyToad! Thanks for replying. Yes it is a COMPAQ PRESSARIO CQ60-211DX NOTEBOOK PC with Windows 7. Just got it about a week ago. It’s not a brand new computer. It’s used with windows 7 reinstalled. From a local company around here that I’ve done business with for years. Since it’s just a sound software issue I’ve been trying to see if I could just fix, update or whatever I can do here instead of having to take it back in for them to do what I can probably do right here at home. The sound works fine. Speakers good. No complaints about anything else. But just recently tried headphones and nothing. Speakers keep working but no headphones. Checked volume mixer and did not see a headphones or speaker/headphones option like in my other HP computer which uses windows 10 and Realtek HD audio. I want to keep my COMPAQ using windows 7. I checked online for help on what to do. I updated the drivers. But didn’t do what you said to do below. I’ll do what you said to do. And I’ll download the BIOS like you said. I’m a computer novice so I don’t really know what all this means. But I will do what you say and get back to you ASAP. I was also wondering if I could uninstall Conexant and replace with Realtek. Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 driver for Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit
I have a Toshiba Satellite M305-S4910. It evidently uses a Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 driver for the built in speakers and microphone.
This system came with Windows Vista. I could never get Windows Visata backup to work so I installed Windows 7 Ultimate.
About three weeks ago I bought a Logitech Clear Chat Stereo headset (with microphone). I wanted to use it with Skype, because the built in microphone for my laptop was picking up too much noise. I had to manually enable the microphone associated with the external jack to get the headset microphone to work. Afterwards, I noticed that I got terrible feedback when I unplugged the headset microphone. I worked with the headset plugged in for awhile, but I eventually found I could unplug it if I disabled the input jack under the audio microphone settings.
I contacted Toshiba and they suggested that I uninstall the audio driver and then reinstall it. I tried, but on boot, all that gets installed is some piece of garbage Microsoft driver that doesn’t work with the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 microphone, at all.
I searched for a Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 driver, but the web search suggests that Micosoft Windows 7 Ultimate doesn’t allow the use of unsigned drivers.
My short question is: How do I get the microphone built into my Toshiba Satellite M305-S4910 to work again?
My longer question is: Why doesn’t the 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate Operating system handle the detection of an external microphone properly and adjust the software mixer settings, so the external microphone and headphone work when plugged in and the external speakers and built in microphone are turned off? Also, when the external microphone (and/or headset) are removed, then why can’t the OS detect that and switch back to the internal microphone, rather than producing a high pitched feedback? Other Operating Systems and drivers handle this correctly.
