Cannot init d3d OR grf file has problem
[ Solution ] 
Greetings,
Since this has been a common and a recurring issue to many AMD/Radeon users, and possibly other GPU brands, it was decided to pin a solution in this section.
To resolve the error:
- Browse to your Ragnarok folder, find and rename dbghelp.dll to dbghelp.dll_old.
- Launch the game.
If that doesn’t resolve the issue then, ensure the following:
- Setup.exe is properly configured under Administrator privileges. If the listings in Setup.exe are empty then it is either due to launching the app without admin or outdated/not supported drivers.
To make sure Setup.exe is always ran as an admin, follow these steps:
Right-click the file > Choose Properties > Choose Compatibility tab > Choose run this program as an administrator. - If your game client is installed under Program Files (x86) or Program Files then move the folder anywhere else outside said folders.
- RO does not support higher resolutions, if using too high values try less. Switching between full to windowed mode may return different results. If you are looking for a windowed mode but on a full screen scale try Borderless-Gaming application.
- Updated graphic card drivers, preferably from their respective manufacturer websites instead of Windows updater.
- If » Cannot init d3d OR grf » is combined with EAC error «Untrusted system file. » then, look into updating the graphic driver from its respective manufacturer website instead of Windows updater. In some cases it may be necessary to downgrade the drivers by a version of 2 but always look for updates first for security concerns.
★Note: If you are getting a different EAC error please post the full error message here to investigate. - If » Cannot init d3d OR grf » is combined with missing sprite errors, then it would mean the game client is missing the necessary files. In this case, please perform a manual re-patch appropriate to your game client.

I just installed Ragnarok Restart on an older computer running Windows Vista while my own is between replacing parts. The OS was just reinstalled and I downloaded DirectX unless there’s one I’m missing?
On the setup Graphics Settings and Screen Size are blank:
Doesn’t work with fullscreen checked or unchecked by the way.
Is there something I’m missing here?

- Browse to Restart installation location, default: C:\Gravity\Ragnarok Restart.
- Find and right-click on Setup.exe, choose Properties, in the window choose Compatibility tab, put a check mark on Run this program as administrator, Apply then OK.
- Launch Setup.exe, adjust the Graphics Settings and Screen Size, OK when done.
- Start the game patcher.
If the menu still empty adjust the Compatibility Mode to Windows XP/Service Pack 3 found under Compatibility tab (Step 2).

Alright I set it to Run as Admin, it wouldn’t let me but I figured out how to do that at least. The drop downs are still empty and I don’t see an option for Windows XP/Service Pack 3 , just Service Pack 2 as the only one with XP on that list.

Hmm, check the following:
- Ensure your graphic card drivers are up to date.
- Ensure Vista is up to date.
- Verify the DirectX version you have installed, to do so Click on Start, Choose Run, in the box type dxdiag, hit Enter.

Not a specific as such, but you may want to get the dxwebsetup.exe from microsoft @ https://www.microsof. ails.aspx?id=35
All old games require it for Directx 9 and below.

Ragnarok requires a vcredist 2008 too as far as i know. Usually other programs and games install that, so people have it, but if it was a clean OS reinstall, installing vcredist 2008 might solve your problem (try installing both x86 and x64, the architecture number there is a bit different in the sense that you don’t only need x64 if your processor is x64, though ragnarok likely only needs the x86 version).
Another thing to pay attention to is to not run any other games or 3d programs which may occupy the graphics card while you star RO, or you might get the same message.
I assume you installed the up to date video card driver properly?
I don’t remember what else can cause this specific issue, though I do believe I had it sometime in the distant past.
Another thing you might try if these don’t work is getting a different setup.exe from other versions of ro / other servers, and try it with that.
I’ll let you know if I remember anything else.

This worked for me:
DirectX Control Panel (Juni 2010)
Run: dxcpl_x86.exe (doesn’t matter if you have 64 or 32 bit, you need the x86 one)
Go to the «Direct Draw»-tab and check the «use hardware acceleration»
