Модификация Slackware Linux с оконной средой FVWM.

Austrumi Live CD (Austrum Latvijas Linukss) — выполненная в виде Live CD, типоразмера «Business Card», модификация Slackware Linux с оконной средой FVWM. Разрабатывается и поддерживается Austrumi программистами из Латгалии (регион Латвии).

Austrumi быстрый и легкий (к тому-же с поддержкой 3D-эффектов), содержит все необходимые (основные) приложения для работы и развлечения. Имеет простые установщики на flash drive или HDD (при надобности), может использоваться как для серверов так и для рабочих станций. Используемый оконный менеджер FVWM предусматривает множество тем оформления (в том числе и windows-like) и содержит в себе большое количество разнообразных приложений.

В состав Austrumi входят приложения для работы с текстом, таблицами, создания веб-страничек, просмотра и редактирования изображений, имеется словарь и просмотрщик файлов в формате PDF. Так же Austrumi включает в себя достаточно большой набор приложений для работы с сетью и интернетом, проигрыватель мультимедиа файлов (кодеки в комплекте), средства для записи СD/DVD дисков, несколько игр и многое другое.

Austrumi работает без диска, полностью копируя себя в оперативную память. После загрузки диск автоматически извлекается и освобождает дисковод. Система не требовательна к системным ресурсам и может работать на любой i386-совместимой системе, способной загружаться с CD или USB диска. Операционная система и запуск приложений происходит из оперативной памяти, что обеспечивает быстроту работы системы.

Для настройки системы в Austrumi есть множество графических утилит позволяющих менять параметры «на лету», так же можно изменять параметры и в файлах конфигурации (при наличии опыта и желания). Нужное приложение, если его нет в составе дистрибутива, легко до установить в графическом менеджере пакетов GSlapt, который установит пакеты из многочисленных репозиториев Slackware. Имеется возможность установки на HDD или флеш носитель с помощью простых графических установщиков.

Рекомендуемые системные требования Austrumi:

Процессор — i386-совместимый (pentium II или новее)

Оперативная память 256 MБ (если меньше, возможна работа с носителя — boot: al nocache)

CD-ROM/USB — НЕОБХОДИМ. Жесткий диск — не обязателен

It requires limited system resources and can run on any Intel-compatible system with a CD-ROM installed. The entire operating system and all of the applications run from RAM, making AUSTRUMI a fast system and allowing the boot medium to be removed after the operating system starts.

Regression from the earlier 4.0. versions.
The supplied iso is always not hybrid and weird, if burned onto a cd you loose the language selection item in the boot menù if copied onto an usb stick with unetbootin (simply dd-ed the usb won’t eorks) it boots UEFI machines but not 64bit old bios machines when instead 4.0. worked.

Installer is clearly an old school installer for bios equipped machine, it seems that id dd-ed the iso (and we have already seen that it doesn’t work) on a single partition.

No way to have a working installation on an UEFI 2015 machine even if booted as UEFI live system.

XFS support not present has to be installed if you plan to install to xfs partitions (to me the best due to its reduced write for an ssd).

Some troubles with a Broadcom BCM43142 but discovering the module they hide in ftp archive and installin it with upgradepkg —install-new broadcom. , configuring the net as static and adding manually your hot-spot configuration to wpa_supplicant.conf using wpa_passphrase it works.

After 1 day and an half spent to make all working and trying to install?
I find it was better to keep alive the i686 version really useful to revive a bunch of hardware still working which lies around and they are experienced instead to do something useless even if it seems simply a remaster of a Slackware current with a well done job on desktop manager and in tranlastion in latvian but 64bit machine apartt some old netbook with i.e. Atom N455 are all UEFI.

Only x86_64 but unable to install on UEFI if you have a not problematic wireless chip it’s good only as live-cd.

Maybe better if they help Slackware keep going supplying FVWM customization and latvian translations.

 Pros: Rock solid base (Slackware)
Up to date packages
Really lightweight
Not DE bloated, they have chosen one (very lightweight) and made it pefect
Really pleasant to see and to use

Cons: It starts in latvian, not so immediate to find out how to change language
Iso image works only if burned on cd even if they say it’s suitable also for usb
Conky to bloated, a less information would make it more immediately readable

In 17 years I tried I lot of distros, there’s something to learn but not so much and it’s easy enough. It deserve a try.
To me it’s lovely.
