Aperture mac os sierra

Question: Q: Aperture in macOS High Sierra.

This is just feedback back to the Aperture community.

I updated my MacBook Air (2014) to the latest macOS 10.13, all seems good with Aperture. Adjustments look fine, loupe, importing, exporting.

If I come across any issues, I’ll post back.

I do have a Mac Pro (2010 SSD w/ Apple RAID) to update. That’ll wait until the WACOM drivers are released end of Oct.

I’m still waiting on a good alternative to Aperture.

Currently the ACD See app (although well spec’d for Windows) has very good potential. Currently there is a beta for Mac users.

I will still check in on Capture One / Lightroom (?7) on occasion.

ATM Aperture is still working (for now) 😎

Great news, I’m someone else still using Aperture, tried a few others but I keep coming back to Aperture.

My iMac is too old to run Sierra, but I was hanging off updating my Mac Book Pro to 10.13 until I heard I could still run Aperture on it.

I store a lot of Aperture exported folders and projects on external hard drives, would I still be able access them when the file system on my Mac Book Pro is changed with High Sierra ?

I do not have the time to learn something else. Aperture is so perfect for me. When an OS version comes out that breaks it, I will cease upgrading my Mac.

A very good plan. But you will have to take very good care of your Mac, so you never need to replace the Mac; a new Mac always comes with the newest MacOS X.

léonie is correct about your Mac… it will eventually die and/or become useless. This is how I decided to deal with the issue:

My “working” Aperture computer is a 2009 Mac Pro which reached end-of-life 1-2 years ago (Apple stopped making replacement parts). I run it on Yosemite to avoid the few minor problems that Aperture has with more recent OS’s. Last year, I bought a used 2012 Mac Pro that I use for all my other work — it is now running High Sierra. I use “Carbon Copy Cloner” to copy an updated version of my Aperture library to the new computer every few days (CCC is fantastic!). I don’t do any edits on the new computer, but my Aperture library is available for reference, plus this copy acts as another backup. If needed, I can install Yosemite on the newer computer and use it as a “back up” computer for Aperture if/when my other computer dies.

I am slowly migrating my photos to Lightroom on the new computer, but want to complete a huge project of scanning/editing

50,000 old family photos (from 1885 to 2003) in Aperture before I use Lightroom exclusively. This project will take

2-3 more years to finish, so hopefully one, or both computers will still be operational. After that, I will simply use Aperture as an archive and use Lightroom for all my future (digital camera) work.

Finally, I also have been exporting a copy of my final edited jpegs to the “Photos” app on the newer computer. Photos — or some future version of the software — will probably be around as long as Apple exists. I periodically give my family members an updated copy of the Photos library. The Aperture and/or Lightroom libraries will simply die after I stop using them. No one will want to deal with those programs, but the Photos app is used by all my family members. This should help assure that the photos out-live me!

The 2012 Mac will probably be at “end-of-life” in the next year, or so. The 2009 Mac is easily the longest I have ever used a computer. However, I can’t imagine using either computer 5 years from now. You’ll have to face the final demise of Aperture at some point! You don’t want all your photos to be lost because you didn’t migrate to a “living” program!

Photos было впервые анонсировано на конференции разработчиков WWDC в начале июня. Приложение позволяет хранить, искать и редактировать фотографии с использованием iCloud на устройствах Apple, но при этом вряд ли обладает широким набором профессиональных инструментов, которым может похвастаться Aperture.

В последний раз Aperture получало серьезное обновление в октябре 2013 года — с тех пор Apple обходилась небольшими минорными апдейтами. Многие пользователи с нетерпением ждали появление Aperture 4, но, увы, этого уже не случится. В то же время у фотографов есть другие удобные утилиты — например, Lightroom.

TechCrunch уточняет, что Apple некоторое время будет выпускать небольшие обновления Aperture для OS X Yosemite, однако со временем прекратит этим заниматься.

Answer to question one. Apple with Photos «Pro» which is a reboot of Aperture 3.6 and I will pay $80.00 all day long for that program.

Answer to comment 2. I agree with that. I have to do something at some time. I’ve come to the conclusion that I am going to loose thousands of hours of editing RAW files on previous Images. In order to keep them I will have to buy stock in hard drives to store converted «versions» to .tiff files. I have done hundreds of selective color over black and white custom images in Aperture. No replacement program will recognize those images. The logical transition would be to go to Lightroom. Also I do seamless editing in Photoshop and Photomatix Pro 5 inside of Aperture without leaving the application. I’ll keep the photoshop editing in Lightroom, but now I will have to go outside of Lightroom to use Photomatix Pro 5. I guess I can use HDR in Photoshop, however Photomatix Pro 5 is much more robust than Photoshop HDR. In the end, I would have thought that Apple would have learned their lesson with the Final Cut Pro kerfuffle. It is very clear that Tim Cook does not have the vision of what Apple should be that Steve Jobs did. Steve Jobs saw Apple as a tool for professionals and a toy for consumers. A great combination. Tim Cook only sees Apple as a consumer toy.

Now that Sierra has been released, I can confirm that Aperture is still working on macOS 10.12 Sierra. I launches, and it has the same glitches as on OS X El Capitan.

Whilst trying to work with my AP-Library from El Capitan in macOS Sierra, I was running more or less into the same problems like described in the previous posts.

1. Full screen opened (hitting F), but crashed whilst hitting F again to close full screen
2. Batch editing (Command-Option-B) did not show the window
3. in the tab „Info“ the window for preferences (the gear wheel icon) didn’t open
4. etc.

If I open a new library in AP in Sierra everything works fine. Oho!

If I try to merge an (El Capitan) AP-library into the new created library in Sierra all above mentioned problems were the same…

Creating a new AP-library in El Capitan and open this one in Sierra works fine! Oho again.

Therefore obviously something must be a wrong in the develop or metadata part of my main aperture library used in El Capitan…

Trying a test library with a few photos and different applied metadata or develop settings brought the solution — at least for me. The custom metadata fields are leading to the suspicious problems described above.

Not knowing if there exist different problems caused by hardware or macOS Sierra leading to the AP-problems for other users, but give the following tipp a try.

1. Create a new AP-library in Sierra
2. Import 3-5 photos (only importing, don’t add metadata, no develop settings, therefore check your import options)
3. try if your specific problems still occur (e.g. hitting F for fullscreen, Command-Option-B for batch editing)

If everything works fine now, do following

1. Open your main AP-library
2. Create a new project and name it whatever you like (e.g. Sierra Test)
3. Search for custom metadata fields using „Aperture Metadata“ and „is not empty“
4. Copy some of the photos found (at least one) into your new project (Sierra Test)
5. Export the project folder as a new AP-library (e.g. Sierra Test Library)
6. Open the new AP-library (Sierra Test Library)
7. Try if your specific problems still occur (e.g. hitting F for fullscreen, Command-Option-B for batch editing). I sure it will
8. Go to tab „Info“, hit the gear wheel icon, go to „manage custom fields“ (sorry but I only work with german version; therefore it may be named a little bit different in english version, but I’m sure you find it)
9. Delete all custom fields
10. Try if your specific problems still occur (once again e.g. hitting F for fullscreen, Command-Option-B for batch editing). I guess everything will work.

If everything works as it should, you have found your specific problem. Congratulations! Otherwise there must be other problems due to hardware or macOS Sierra which I am not able to detect (thanks god!).

Now open your main AP-library and . STOPP — DO NOT delete the custom metadata fields. Please first think about if you need your custom metadata field data! If not delete them. If you need them, my suggestion is to copy them over to the keywords field. I will not describe this, as I assume you are a long time user and know how to do it. When you have finished, you should now delete your custom metadata fields. As soon as the last field is deleted, Aperture on macOS Sierra will work again as it should (and has yet running El Capitan).

There is one more thing 😉

if you use smart albums AND have some custom metadata fields selected, please be sure to change your settings respectively to the „new home“ of your custom metadata field data…
